BIO
My background provides a melange of influences which emerge in my work. I was born in Northern Ireland and grew up throughout the troubles in East Belfast. My grandfather had been a vicar in a small Irish town, while my great grandfather had come to London from Italy in 1881, a linguistics professor who established the Dante Society. My own large family are a mix of Trinidadian, Northern Irish and Italian roots. All this feeds into a body of work which interrogates the increasingly expanded landscape of the contemporary self, a phenomenon which unites us all.
My practice encompasses installation, object and digital. It embraces two distinct phases. Following graduation in 1989 I spent seven years exhibiting internationally across venues in the UK, the USA, Poland, France and Spain. I also undertook residences in a number of countries, including a three-month residency at the Bemis Centre for Contemporary Art in Omaha, Nebraska. Following this I took a hiatus from exhibiting to raise my four young children. On returning to exhibiting in 2008 I received a research and development award from Arts Council England which enabled me to expand my work into new technologies, particularly video art.
Since 2008 I have continued to exhibit nationally and internationally and have work held in in private and public collections in Europe, North America and the UK. I have extensive experience in arts and health, in education, in writing and curating and work from my studio in Wiltshire. I am a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and, following obtaining a master’s degree in theology, Imagination and Culture, I am currently undertaking a practice based PhD at Winchester School of Art, now part of Southampton University.
